Sheila Birling: A Journey to Maturity

Eric Birling: From Weakness to Moral Awakening
Eric is introduced as being "in his early twenties, not quite at ease, half shy, half assertive" - a stark contrast to the confident Gerald Croft. His awkward demeanor hints at deeper issues that are later revealed throughout the play.
Initially portrayed as a weak character, Eric tries to escape questioning and responsibility. However, his emotional confession in Act III reveals genuine anguish that sets him apart from his parents' cold detachment. His behaviour toward Eva was certainly exploitative - he admits to threatening her to gain entry to her room and confesses he was never in love with her.
Despite these troubling actions, Eric undergoes a significant transformation. While his parents celebrate discovering the Inspector was a fraud, Eric, like his sister, insists on focusing on the moral lessons they should learn. His shame and regret demonstrate a genuine moral awakening.
