Scrooge's Character Transformation
Dickens creates one of the most striking character redemptions in English literature through Scrooge's journey. At the start, he's absolutely dreadful - selfish, ignorant, and completely obsessed with money whilst hating everything about Christmas.
The famous quote 'Bah! Humbug!' perfectly captures his miserable attitude towards joy and celebration. Dickens describes him as 'as solitary as an oyster' and notes that 'not even the coldest weather could chill him' - showing how his cold heart makes him colder than winter itself.
His cruel response 'Are there no prisons?' when asked to help the poor reveals his complete lack of compassion. He's greedy, frozen emotionally, and treats people terribly - including his underpaid clerk Bob Cratchit.
Key Point: Notice how Dickens uses weather imagery (cold, frozen) to show Scrooge's emotional state - this is called pathetic fallacy and it's brilliant for exam analysis!
By the story's end, Scrooge becomes like a father figure to Tiny Tim and genuinely cares for the Cratchit family. He gives Bob a pay raise, buys the family a turkey, and declares 'I'm as merry as a schoolboy' - showing he's rediscovered joy and emotion. This transformation makes him one of literature's most memorable characters.
