Romeo starts as a romantic idealist who falls in love at first sight with Juliet. He's intelligent and sensitive, but these qualities come with serious flaws that lead to his downfall.
His impulsive nature proves deadly - he rushes into love, marriage, and ultimately violence without thinking things through. When Tybalt kills his best mate Mercutio, Romeo's peaceful nature snaps and he kills Tybalt in revenge.
Romeo sees Friar Lawrence as a father figure and confides in him completely. This relationship shows Romeo's need for guidance, but also his willingness to take extreme risks for love. His famous line "It is the east and Juliet is the sun" reveals how completely love consumes him.
Key Point: Romeo's greatest strength (his capacity for deep love) is also his tragic flaw - it makes him act without considering consequences.
