Character Relationships in Romeo and Juliet

Ever wondered why everyone seems to be fighting or dying in Romeo and Juliet? The characters are all tangled up in family feuds, friendships, and tragic misunderstandings that make this play so dramatically intense.

The Montagues form Romeo's family unit. His parents, Lord and Lady Montague, represent the older generation caught up in the ancient feud. Lady Montague actually dies of grief when Romeo gets banished - showing how the family conflict destroys everyone, not just the young lovers.

The Capulets are Juliet's family and the Montagues' enemies. Lord Capulet is Juliet's controlling father who wants her to marry Paris, whilst Lady Capulet follows her husband's orders rather than supporting her daughter. Tybalt, Juliet's fiery cousin, gets killed by Romeo after he murders Mercutio.

Key Point: The adults in both families are so obsessed with their feud that they completely miss what's happening to their children until it's too late.

The go-betweens try to help but often make things worse. Friar Lawrence marries Romeo and Juliet secretly, whilst the Nurse acts as Juliet's mother figure and messenger. Even Friar John, who's sent to tell Romeo about Juliet's fake death plan, fails at the crucial moment. Meanwhile, Mercutio (Romeo's best mate) and Benvolio (the peacemaker) get caught up in the violence, with Mercutio dying and Prince banishing Romeo as punishment.
