Remains - Trauma and Memory in War Poetry
Ever wondered how a single moment in war can haunt someone forever? "Remains" takes you inside a soldier's mind as he recounts shooting a looter and shows how that memory refuses to leave him alone.
The poem starts casually, like the soldier is telling a mate down the pub about tackling looters raiding a bank. Three soldiers open fire on a running looter who's "probably armed, possibly not" - that doubt becomes crucial later. The conversational tone ("one of them legs it up the road") makes the violence that follows even more shocking.
After shooting the looter "a dozen times," the graphic imagery becomes overwhelming. The soldier describes seeing "broad daylight on the other side" of the man's body and watching a mate "toss his guts back into his body" like rubbish. This dehumanising language shows how war forces people to disconnect from the horror they witness.
Key insight: The casual tone contrasting with brutal violence reflects how soldiers must emotionally detach themselves to cope with trauma.
The turning point comes when the soldier says "End of story, except not really." The dead man's "blood-shadow stays on the street," and the soldier walks over it repeatedly on patrol. Even when he blinks at home, the looter "bursts again through the doors of the bank" - showing how traumatic memories replay endlessly in his mind, making escape impossible.

The app is very easy to use and well designed. I have found everything I was looking for so far and have been able to learn a lot from the presentations! I will definitely use the app for a class assignment! And of course it also helps a lot as an inspiration.
This app is really great. There are so many study notes and help [...]. My problem subject is French, for example, and the app has so many options for help. Thanks to this app, I have improved my French. I would recommend it to anyone.
Wow, I am really amazed. I just tried the app because I've seen it advertised many times and was absolutely stunned. This app is THE HELP you want for school and above all, it offers so many things, such as workouts and fact sheets, which have been VERY helpful to me personally.
