The Reality of Trench Warfare
You've probably seen war films full of explosions and heroic charges, but Owen shows us something far more disturbing - soldiers slowly dying from cold and boredom. The opening lines immediately throw you into their misery with phrases like "merciless iced east winds that knive us."
The repetition of "But nothing happens" creates this haunting sense of endless waiting. These men aren't dying gloriously in battle - they're just freezing to death in muddy trenches whilst nothing significant occurs. Owen uses this refrain to show how the anticipation of action becomes torture itself.
What's brilliant about Owen's technique is how he makes the weather the real enemy. The wind "knives" them, the air "shudders black with snow," and even the snowflakes seem sinister as they come "feeling for our faces." Nature itself has turned hostile.
Key insight: The phrase "What are we doing here?" captures every soldier's doubt about the war's purpose - a question that still resonates today.
Death and Disillusionment
The second half of the poem gets even darker as Owen explores how war destroys faith and humanity. The soldiers imagine returning home, but even these dreams feel hollow - the doors are "closed" to them, symbolising how they're already cut off from normal life.
Owen's religious imagery is particularly striking here. He suggests these men believed their sacrifice would preserve life and hope for others, but now they're losing faith entirely. The line "For love of God here; therefore were born" shows how war has shattered their spiritual beliefs.
The poem's ending is absolutely devastating. Owen describes frozen corpses with "eyes are ice," showing how exposure has literally and metaphorically frozen these men's humanity. The final "But nothing happens" suggests that even death doesn't bring meaning or change.
Remember: Owen himself died just one week before WWI ended, making this poem his own prophecy about the war's meaningless waste of life.
