Ozymandias - Power's Ultimate Downfall

Ever wondered what happens to dictators and tyrants after they die? Shelley's Ozymandias gives us a pretty clear answer through the story of a massive, broken statue lying forgotten in the desert.

The poem follows a sonnet format (14 lines) and tells the story through a traveller who discovers the ruins of Ozymandias's statue. The pharaoh's inscription boasts "My name is Ozymandias, king of kings: Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!" Yet ironically, nothing but decay surrounds the broken monument.

Shelley uses powerful imagery to show the contrast between Ozymandias's hubris (extreme arrogance) and reality. Words like "shattered," "wreck," and "decay" emphasise how time destroys everything, whilst sibilance creates harsh, sharp sounds that reflect the ruler's cruelty.

Key Insight: The name 'Ozymandias' combines 'Ozy' (meaning 'to breathe') and 'mandias' (meaning 'to rule') - but even breathing and ruling must eventually end.
