Othello is Shakespeare's tragic tale of a respected military general... Show more

Ever wondered how a respected war hero can become a murderer? Othello shows us exactly how this transformation happens. He's a general in the Venetian army - brave, skilled, and admired by his soldiers for his military excellence.
But there's a catch that makes everything complicated. Othello is an outsider - an African in white Venetian society. People call him cruel names like "thick lips" and "old black ram," constantly reminding him he doesn't belong. This racism creates deep insecurities that will eventually destroy him.
As a tragic hero, Othello has what Aristotle called a hamartia - a fatal flaw. His weakness? He's susceptible to jealousy. These insecurities make him an easy target for Iago's manipulation, even though Iago never provides a single piece of proof about Desdemona's supposed infidelity.
Quick Insight: Othello believes all women are disloyal and fears he's not good enough for Desdemona because of racist attitudes he's absorbed. This makes Iago's job frighteningly easy.

Watch how Shakespeare uses animal imagery throughout the play to show Othello's moral decline. As jealousy consumes him, Othello begins displaying animalistic behaviours that contrast sharply with his noble beginnings.
When Othello finally kills Desdemona, he calls it an "honourable murder" - he genuinely believes he's doing the right thing. He claims he "loved not wisely but too well," suggesting his crime came from loving too deeply rather than thinking clearly.
But once the truth emerges, his remorse is devastating. "Whip me, ye devils" he cries, feeling he deserves not just punishment but eternal torture for his actions.
The play presents Desdemona as Heaven and Iago as Hell, dramatising the battle between good and evil in Othello's soul. Unfortunately, hell wins this round.
Key Point: Othello's inability to handle uncertainty drives him to madness - he'd rather believe the worst than live with doubt.

These quotes reveal Othello's character journey and are crucial for your essays. "She loved me for the dangers I had passed" (1.3) shows how Othello and Desdemona's relationship began with mutual respect - quite different from how it ends.
"I know, Iago, thy honesty and love" (2.3) is deeply ironic since Iago is anything but honest. This quote highlights Othello's blind spot regarding Iago, setting up his eventual downfall.
When Othello says "I'll see before I doubt" (3.3), he's trying to resist suspicion about Desdemona. Ironically, this gives Iago the perfect opportunity to provide fake "evidence" of her unfaithfulness.
The final quote, "Killing myself, to die upon a kiss" (5.2), shows Othello's attempt to restore both his and Desdemona's honour through suicide - a tragic end to a tragic hero.
Exam Tip: These quotes work brilliantly for essays about manipulation, jealousy, and the tragic hero structure.

"Set my life upon her faith" (1.3) is heavily ironic - Othello literally stakes his life on trusting Desdemona, which is exactly what destroys him. This quote perfectly sets up the tragedy that follows.
The quote "I saw't not, thought it not, it harmed not me" (3.3) captures Othello's anguish perfectly. He's saying ignorance was bliss - before Iago planted seeds of doubt, he was happy. Now jealousy consumes his every thought.
"My bloody thoughts with violent pace shall ne'er look back" (3.3) marks the point of no return. Once convinced of Desdemona's betrayal, Othello becomes unstoppable in his quest for revenge.
In his final speech, "one that loved not wisely but too well" (5.2), Othello tries to control his legacy. He wants to be remembered as someone whose love was too intense rather than as a jealous murderer.
Critical Thinking: Does Othello die as a hero who recognises his mistakes, or as a villain trying to excuse his actions? Shakespeare leaves this deliberately ambiguous.
