My Last Duchess Analysis

Ever wondered how someone can reveal their darkest secrets without even realising it? That's exactly what happens in this poem, where the Duke of Ferrara shows off his late wife's portrait whilst accidentally confessing to her murder.

The poem uses dramatic monologue form, meaning we only hear one voice - the Duke's - as he speaks to a silent listener (a marriage broker). Written in rhyming couplets and iambic pentameter, the formal structure contrasts sharply with the Duke's casual confession of jealousy and control.

The Duke is furious that his Duchess treated everyone equally - she smiled at servants the same way she smiled at him. He couldn't bear that she found joy in simple things like sunsets and flowers, rather than focusing solely on his "nine-hundred-years-old name." His pride was so wounded that he "gave commands; then all smiles stopped together" - a euphemism for having her killed.
