The Duke's Twisted Introduction
Ever wondered how a murderer might casually chat about their crime? The Duke of Ferrara shows us exactly that as he proudly displays a portrait of his deceased wife to a visitor.
The poem opens with the possessive pronoun "my" - immediately showing how the Duke views his wife as property rather than a person. He's dehumanised her into an object he owns, just like the painting on his wall. The phrase "looking as if she were alive" creates an eerie tone that hints at something sinister.
Notice how the Duke mentions "Frà Pandolf" (the artist) deliberately - he wants his visitor to ask questions so he can tell his twisted story. The caesura (pauses) in his speech reveal his rising anger as he remembers his wife's behaviour.
Key Point: The Duke's controlling nature is evident from the very first line - he literally controls who can see the painting by drawing and closing the curtain himself.
The Duchess had a problem, according to her husband: she was "too easily impressed" and smiled at everyone, not just him. Her "looks went everywhere" - a phrase that reveals the Duke's jealousy and his belief that she was flirtatious.
The Duke's Deadly Solution
Here's where the Duke's true monster nature emerges - he couldn't bear that his wife treated everyone's gifts the same way she treated his "nine-hundred-years-old name".
The Duke is absolutely hubristic (arrogantly proud) about his family's ancient surname and status. He expected his wife to show more respect for his prestigious background than she showed to simple gifts like cherries or compliments. His anger builds as he describes how she "thanked men" in the same way she thanked him.
What makes this even more chilling is his admission: "I choose never to stoop". Rather than communicate with his wife about his feelings, his pride prevented him from lowering himself to explain his expectations. The caesura in "I choose / Never to stoop" emphasises his stubborn arrogance.
Then comes the most sinister line: "I gave commands; Then all smiles stopped together". This is a euphemism for murder - he ordered her death rather than deal with her independence.
Key Point: The Duke views women as collectible objects - notice how he immediately moves from discussing his dead wife to showing off his Neptune statue, treating both as mere possessions.
The poem ends with him already arranging his next marriage, referring to his potential new wife with the same possessive language. He's learned nothing and will likely repeat this horrific pattern.
