Arthur Birling - Character Analysis

Arthur Birling is Priestley's representation of capitalist attitudes in Edwardian England. He's a wealthy businessman who's obsessed with his social status and constantly reminds everyone of his importance. His famous quote "a man has to make his own way" perfectly captures his selfish, individualistic worldview that Priestley wants us to reject.

Birling's arrogance shows through his use of dramatic irony - he confidently dismisses "silly little war scares" and calls the Titanic "unsinkable." The audience knows he's completely wrong about both, which makes him look foolish and undermines his authority. This technique helps Priestley show that wealthy businessmen like Birling don't actually know better than everyone else.

His insecurity about his social position becomes obvious through his repetitive speech patterns. He keeps saying "of course" and repeating phrases like "hard-headed businessman" because he's trying to convince himself and others of his importance. The stage directions tell us he should speak with a provincial accent, marking him as nouveau riche rather than old money like the Crofts family.
