Lady Macbeth's Manipulation and Guilt
Lady Macbeth isn't your typical Shakespearean woman - she's ruthlessly ambitious and willing to abandon her femininity to get what she wants. When she calls on spirits to "unsex me here", she's literally asking to be stripped of any weakness or sympathy that might stop her from achieving power.
Her manipulation of Macbeth is psychological warfare at its finest. She attacks his manhood directly, telling him "when you durst do it, then you were a man" to pressure him into murder. This tactic works because she knows exactly how to push his buttons.
What makes Lady Macbeth truly fascinating is her unwavering loyalty to Macbeth. Despite the horrific nature of their plan, she declares she would do anything for him, even if it means "killing the king". The blood on her hands - both literal and metaphorical - eventually drives her to madness.
Think about it: Lady Macbeth challenges gender expectations of her time by being more ruthless than her warrior husband.
Macbeth's Internal Conflict
Macbeth is caught between his ambitious dreams and his moral conscience. Lady Macbeth sees this weakness perfectly, noting that whilst he has ambition, he lacks "the illness should attend it" - meaning he's too kind to be truly ruthless.
His response "I dare do all that may become a man" shows he's trying to maintain his honour whilst being pushed towards evil. Macbeth knows there's a line between bravery and brutality, but the witches' prophecy starts to blur that line for him.
The prophecy acts as a foreshadowing device that sets everything in motion. When Macbeth realises the witches spoke truth, he understands that reaching the throne will require "terrible and violent acts". His reputation as "brave Macbeth" ironically becomes the foundation for his downfall.
Key insight: Macbeth's tragedy isn't that he's evil, but that his good qualities become twisted by ambition and manipulation.
