The Banquet Scene: Guilt Takes Over
You're watching Macbeth completely lose it at his own banquet - he's seeing Banquo's ghost and freaking out in front of all his guests. This moment is massive because it shows what ambition has actually cost him: his sanity.
When Macbeth says the sight might "appal the devil," Shakespeare is being clever here. Macbeth might actually be talking about himself as the devil - he's so horrified by what he's become that even he can't handle it. The guilt from murdering Banquo is literally haunting him.
Lady Macbeth's reaction tells us everything. She dismisses his fear as just an "air-drawn dagger" - basically calling it all in his head. Her use of the word "flaws" suggests she thinks his guilt is a weakness that needs fixing, which shows how twisted their relationship has become.
Key Point: This scene proves that Macbeth's ambition hasn't brought him power - it's brought him terror and isolation.
From Hero to Villain: The Complete Transformation
Remember how the play started? Macbeth was described as "brave" and "valiant" - literally called "Bellona's bridegroom" (married to the goddess of war). Shakespeare uses harsh consonant sounds to show his strength, and everyone celebrated when he brutally defeated enemies for his king.
The contrast is shocking. Early Macbeth used violence for loyalty and honour. Current Macbeth uses violence for selfish ambition, and it's destroying him from the inside. Shakespeare is basically saying: "Look what happens when you step out of your natural place in society."
The witches' prophecies were the turning point. Macbeth becomes "rapt" (completely absorbed) by their promises, whilst Banquo sees right through them. This shows how ambition can blind you to obvious dangers.
Shakespeare describes Macbeth's "vaulting ambition" that "overleaps itself" - imagine someone jumping so hard they fall over. That's exactly what happens to Macbeth's character.
Key Point: Shakespeare uses Macbeth's downfall to warn audiences about the dangers of wanting too much, too fast.
