Hecate's Warning and Lennox's Suspicions

The scene opens with Hecate delivering her final warning about security being humanity's greatest enemy - basically saying overconfidence will destroy Macbeth. She then disappears with mysterious music, leaving the witches to continue their dark work.

Lennox then enters with another Scottish lord, and his speech is absolutely dripping with sarcasm. He pretends to praise Macbeth whilst actually revealing he knows the truth about all the murders. Notice how he sarcastically calls it "noble" that Macbeth killed Duncan's guards before they could defend themselves.

The irony here is brilliant - Lennox lists all of Macbeth's crimes whilst pretending to defend him. He mentions how "convenient" it was that Duncan died just after Macbeth pitied him, and how Banquo "walked too late" (clearly murdered), and how Malcolm and Donalbain look guilty for fleeing.

Key Insight: Lennox's sarcastic tone shows that intelligent nobles aren't fooled by Macbeth's lies - they're just too afraid to speak openly.

The Resistance Forms

Here's where things get seriously interesting for the plot. The Lord reveals that Malcolm is living safely in England under the protection of the holy King Edward. More importantly, Macduff has gone there to ask for military help to overthrow Macbeth.

Macduff refused Macbeth's invitation to the feast, which has put him in serious danger. The messenger who was sent to fetch Macduff came back with a flat refusal, showing that Macduff is openly defying the tyrant now.

The Lord explains that Macduff wants to rally Northumberland and the warrior Siward to help restore Scotland to peace. Their goal is simple: "Give to our tables meat, sleep to our nights, free from our feasts and banquets bloody knives."

Macbeth is now preparing for war because he knows rebellion is brewing. The scene ends with both men hoping for divine intervention to save Scotland from Macbeth's "accursed" rule.

Plot Point: This scene sets up Act 4 and 5 - we now know that Malcolm and Macduff are gathering an English army to invade Scotland.
