The Witches' Dark Powers

The scene opens with the three witches showing off their supernatural abilities in pretty disturbing ways. They've been busy torturing a sailor whose wife refused to share her chestnuts - talk about holding a grudge! The witches plan to control storms and weather to make this poor bloke's life miserable for years.

What's really unsettling is how they work together, sharing their powers to create chaos across the seas. However, Shakespeare gives us a crucial detail - whilst they can create storms and make someone's life hell, they can't actually sink ships. This limitation of their power becomes important later.

The pathetic fallacy (weather reflecting mood) creates an ominous atmosphere with thunder rumbling overhead. These aren't your typical fairy tale witches - they're genuinely menacing forces that represent the dark side of supernatural power.

Key insight: The witches' limited power suggests that whilst they can influence events, humans still have some control over their own fate.

The Life-Changing Prophecies

When Macbeth and Banquo finally arrive, the contrast between them is immediately obvious. The witches deliver three bombshell predictions: Macbeth will become Thane of Cawdor and then king, whilst Banquo's children will be kings. Notice how Macbeth goes speechless whilst Banquo stays curious and questioning.

Banquo's reaction is brilliant - he's suspicious and asks smart questions about why these weird-looking creatures (he even mentions their beards!) have stopped them with such massive news. His scepticism makes him the voice of reason in this scene.

The dramatic irony kicks in when Ross arrives with news that Macbeth has indeed been named Thane of Cawdor. Suddenly, the first prophecy has come true, making the second one (becoming king) seem much more believable. Banquo wisely warns that "instruments of darkness" often tell small truths to trick people into bigger mistakes.

Key insight: Banquo represents wisdom and caution - he understands that the devil often uses truth as bait for larger deceptions.

Macbeth's Fatal Temptation

This is where things get psychologically intense. Macbeth's aside reveals he's already thinking about murder - his imagination is running wild with possibilities. The phrase "my thought, whose murder yet is but fantastical" shows his mind has jumped straight to killing Duncan, even though the witches never mentioned murder.

Banquo continues being the voice of wisdom, essentially saying "mate, don't trust these supernatural weirdos." Meanwhile, Macbeth is caught between two ideas: either he'll become king through fate ("chance may crown me") or he'll need to take action himself.

The clothing metaphor is clever - just like new clothes need time to fit properly, Macbeth needs time to get used to his new title. But we can see his ambition is already getting the better of him. The scene ends with both men agreeing to discuss things later, but significantly, they never actually do.

Key insight: Macbeth's immediate leap to thoughts of murder reveals that the ambition was already inside him - the witches just awakened what was already there.
