Act 1, Scene 2 - The War Hero's Moment

Ever wondered how quickly a hero can become a villain? This scene shows Macbeth at his absolute best, which makes his later downfall even more shocking.

A wounded captain arrives at Duncan's court with brilliant news - Macbeth and Banquo have absolutely smashed the rebels and invading Norwegians. The captain's description is properly brutal: Macbeth literally "unseamed him from the nave to the chops" (sliced a traitor from belly button to jaw) and stuck his head on the castle walls. Grim, but effective.

King Duncan is absolutely chuffed with Macbeth's performance. He's so impressed that he immediately decides to execute the traitorous Thane of Cawdor and give that title to Macbeth instead. Duncan's line "What he hath lost, noble Macbeth hath won" basically sums up the whole power transfer.

Key insight: Notice how Macbeth is praised for extreme violence here - Shakespeare's setting up the irony that this same brutality will eventually make him a tyrant. The divine right of kings concept means Macbeth's violence is "heroic" when it serves Duncan, but becomes evil when it serves himself.
