Ralph's Character Development

Ralph starts off as the golden boy - he's charismatic, brave, and fair, exactly the kind of person you'd want leading your group if you were stranded on a desert island. He believes in doing the right thing and tries to establish rules that will keep everyone safe and organised.

But here's where it gets interesting: as the story progresses, Ralph finds it incredibly difficult to maintain order and civility. The other boys start to abandon his leadership style in favour of Jack's more primitive approach. Ralph's struggles aren't because he's weak - they're because keeping civilisation going is actually really hard work.

The clash between Ralph and Jack becomes the heart of the novel. Ralph represents everything good about organised society - democracy, fairness, and long-term thinking. Jack represents our darker impulses - immediate gratification, violence, and tribal mentality.
