Lady Macbeth: The Ultimate Power Player
Lady Macbeth would've absolutely shocked Jacobean audiences because she's everything women weren't supposed to be - powerful, manipulative, and completely in control. Whilst her husband Macbeth is hesitant and moral, she's the one pushing him towards murder and treason.
Shakespeare deliberately made her challenge traditional gender roles to send a message to King James I about the dangers of powerful women. Remember, James had just taken over from Queen Elizabeth I, so the idea of female power was quite topical and controversial.
Unlike Lady Macduff whorepresentsthe′ideal′woman−loving, protective, maternal, Lady Macbeth rejects everything feminine. She literally asks to have her maternal instincts removed ("take my milk for gall") and talks about violently killing a baby ("dash'd its brains out").
Key Point: Lady Macbeth's power comes from her ability to manipulate Macbeth's masculinity - she knows exactly which buttons to press to get what she wants.
Her manipulation techniques are brilliant but brutal. She questions his manhood ("when you durst do it, then you are a man"), uses rhetorical questions to make him feel stupid, and throws insults like "coward" when he wavers. Shakespeare even shows her dominance through stage time - she gets more lines and constantly interrupts Macbeth, proving who's really in charge.
