Acts I-III: Setup to Climax
Act I kicks off with a supernatural bang when the ghost of Hamlet's father appears at Elsinore Castle. The ghost reveals that Claudius (Hamlet's uncle) murdered him and has now married Hamlet's mother, Gertrude. This revelation sets Hamlet on his path of revenge, though he's torn between duty and morality.
Act II shows Hamlet's clever strategy of feigned madness. He pretends to be mentally unstable to investigate his father's death without suspicion. The arrival of travelling actors gives him a brilliant idea - he'll stage a play that mirrors his father's murder to test Claudius's guilt.
Act III delivers the play's climax with the famous "play within a play". When the actors perform The Murder of Gonzago, Claudius's horrified reaction confirms his guilt. The act ends dramatically with Hamlet accidentally killing Polonius whilst confronting his mother, mistaking him for Claudius.
Key insight: Hamlet's internal struggle between thought and action drives the entire first half of the play - he's a thinker, not a natural killer.
Acts IV-V: Tragedy Unfolds
Act IV shows the devastating consequences of violence spreading throughout the court. Claudius sends Hamlet to England with secret execution orders, but Hamlet cleverly escapes. The plan spectacularly backfires - Gertrude drinks the poisoned wine, both duelists wound each other fatally, and Hamlet finally kills Claudius. The play ends with Fortinbras arriving to find the Danish royal family destroyed, highlighting how revenge ultimately destroys everyone.
