The Valley of Ashes: More Than Just a Wasteland
Ever wondered why Fitzgerald spends so much time describing this "solemn dumping ground"? The Valley of Ashes represents everything wrong with 1920s American society. It's where the poor live whilst the wealthy play in their glittering worlds of East and West Egg.
The "ash grey men" who inhabit this place show the physical and moral decay caused by industrial capitalism. They're literally covered in the waste products of a society obsessed with wealth and consumption. This godless place lacks any moral guidance—even the eyes of Dr T.J. Eckleberg are just empty advertising, not real divine oversight.
Myrtle Wilson's tragic story perfectly embodies the valley's symbolism. Her affair with Tom represents a desperate attempt to escape poverty and achieve the American Dream. Yet her violent death in a car crash brings her body right back to the Valley of Ashes—proving she could never truly escape her origins.
Key Insight: Notice how Fitzgerald uses the phrase "ashes grow like wheat"—this brilliant metaphor shows how poverty and despair spread naturally in this corrupted landscape, just like crops in fertile soil.
The valley also serves as major foreshadowing for the novel's destruction. Its moral emptiness predicts the tragic endings that await the main characters when their illusions finally crumble.
