Macbeth's First Appearance as King
Right from his first scene as king, Macbeth is already showing his true colours as a manipulative hypocrite. He's literally accusing Duncan's sons of their father's murder whilst knowing full well he's the actual killer - talk about nerve!
Shakespeare deliberately shows us how Macbeth follows Lady Macbeth's earlier advice to "look like the innocent flower, but be the serpent under't". This biblical reference to the snake that tempted Eve makes Lady Macbeth the tempter figure, suggesting that manipulation and evil can come from unexpected sources.
What's particularly striking is how this supposedly brave warrior is still completely under his wife's influence. Despite being king, Macbeth remains gullible and easily manipulated - hardly the qualities you'd want in a leader!
Key Insight: Shakespeare uses this scene to immediately establish doubt about Macbeth's fitness to rule, warning against leaders who lie and manipulate for personal gain.
The Bloodthirsty Tyrant Emerges
As the play progresses, Macbeth transforms into exactly the kind of ruler nobody wants - a bloodthirsty tyrant. His famous line "I am in blood stepp'd so far" reveals how consumed he's become by violence and guilt.
Shakespeare cleverly uses the metaphor of wading through a river of blood to show Macbeth's realisation that his entire reign has been built on murder. The reference to "wade no more" suggests he knows there's no going back - he's already committed to this path of destruction.
The playwright might be referencing the River Styx from Greek mythology here, where souls cross over to the underworld with no return. Unlike traditional tragic heroes who fight their fate, Macbeth begins to accept his doom, making him particularly unsympathetic.
Key Insight: This imagery serves as a warning about the consequences of disrupting the natural order - once you start down the path of tyranny, it's almost impossible to turn back.
