Christmas serves as the perfect backdrop for Scrooge's transformation. The three spirits each reveal different truths about life and human nature. The Ghost of Christmas Past appears with a 'bright clear jet of light', illuminating forgotten memories and lost opportunities for happiness.
The Ghost of Christmas Present carries an 'antique scabbard' with no sword in it, 'eaten up with rust' - symbolising how peace has replaced conflict in truly generous hearts. This spirit shows Scrooge the joy he's missing by being avaricious and obsessed with wealth.

Scrooge begins 'solitary as an oyster' - completely cut off from human warmth and connection. His isolation stems from his avaricious nature and zealous pursuit of wealth above all else. Even Marley's ghost recognises this, crying that 'mankind was my business' - a realisation that comes too late for him.
Redemption becomes possible when Scrooge finally accepts he can change. His desperate plea 'hear me! I am not the man I was' shows genuine peripeteia (a turning point). By the end, he's like 'quite a baby' - reborn and innocent again.
