Exploring Conflict Effects: 'Exposure' and 'Remains' Comparison Essay for GCSE
Long-Term Mental Damage from Conflict
Ever wondered why so many soldiers struggle when they return home? Both poems show how conflict creates lasting trauma that haunts people long after the fighting ends.
In 'Remains', the speaker suffers from PTSD after shooting a looter. The phrase "every round as it rips through his life" shows how vivid flashbacks torment him. The word "rips" emphasises the violent speed of killing compared to the slow, ongoing guilt that follows.
Owen's 'Exposure' presents similar mental damage. The line "four ghosts drag home" suggests the soldiers have died emotionally, even if they're physically alive. These aren't literal ghosts - they represent men so traumatised by war that they've lost their humanity.
Remember: Both poems show that the psychological effects of conflict often last much longer than the physical battles themselves.
How Conflict Brutalises People
