Eric Birling: Character Analysis

Ever wondered why Eric seems so uncomfortable around his family from the very beginning? Priestley uses Eric to show how the younger generation can break free from their parents' outdated views and create a better society.

Eric's transformation is the most dramatic in the entire play. He starts as someone who "wasn't in love with her or anything" but ends up truly understanding his social responsibility towards Eva Smith and others. This journey from selfish indifference to genuine empathy represents hope for social change.

The tension between Eric and Mr Birling stems from completely different values about masculinity and success. Whilst Mr Birling obsesses over his knighthood and social climbing, Eric dismisses these concerns with "oh for God's sake! What does it matter now whether they give you a knighthood or not?" This shows Eric's growing rejection of capitalist values.

Eric's exploitation of Eva Smith initially reflects the worst aspects of gender and class inequality in society. However, his genuine remorse and acceptance of responsibility demonstrate that change is possible, even after terrible mistakes.

Key Point: Eric represents Priestley's belief that the younger generation can learn from their mistakes and build a more equal society based on socialist principles of collective responsibility.
