Dr Lanyon: The Traditionalist Scientist

Dr Lanyon is a classic Victorian gentleman - friendly, sociable and faithful to his principles. Described as a "hearty, healthy, dapper, red-faced gentleman" who "sprang up and welcomed him with both hands," he comes across as larger than life and genuinely warm.

As a rational scientist, Lanyon firmly rejects Jekyll's supernatural experiments, calling them "unscientific balderdash." He and Jekyll were once inseparable friends until Jekyll's work diverged from traditional scientific methods. Lanyon's character takes a tragic turn when he witnesses Jekyll's transformation.
