Bayonet Charge by Ted Hughes
Hughes knew war's impact firsthand - his father survived WWI, giving the poet deep insight into battle's psychological trauma. The poem deliberately plunges you into chaos with "Suddenly he awoke and was running," making you feel as disoriented as the soldier himself.
The raw imagery hits immediately - "raw-seamed hot khaki" suggests both the soldier's inexperience and physical discomfort. Hughes uses 'H' alliteration in "hot," "heavy," and "hearing" to mimic the soldier's desperate panting as bullets smack around him.
Similes dominate the poem because Hughes struggled to find adequate words for war's horrors. The rifle becomes "numb as a smashed arm" - completely useless when terror takes over. Even his patriotic feelings transform into something painful, "sweating like molten iron from the centre of his chest."
The wounded hare serves as a turning point - its silent suffering mirrors the soldier's own trauma whilst showing how war destroys innocent nature. The soldier realises he's just a cog in the "cold clockwork of the stars and the nations," powerless against forces beyond his control.
Key Insight: Hughes deliberately uses enjambment and uneven line lengths to mirror war's chaotic nature - the poem's structure literally reflects the soldier's disoriented mental state.
