A Wider View - Exploring Industrial Heritage Through Poetry
Ever wondered what life was like for your ancestors during the Industrial Revolution? This poem brilliantly captures that harsh reality whilst showing how people found hope even in the toughest times.
The poem follows two time periods - the Victorian era (1869) and today. Seneviratne's great-great-grandfather worked gruelling 12-hour shifts in Marshall's Temple Mill, combing flax in terrible conditions. Despite living in cramped back-to-back houses with disease like cholera threatening his family, he still searched for beauty and hope in his world.
The free verse structure mirrors the speaker's journey through time and space. Notice how the poem flows without rigid rhyme schemes, just like the River Aire that connects past and present. The industrial setting of Leeds comes alive through specific landmarks like Tower Works and Harding's chimney.
Key poetic techniques include sibilance (repeated 's' sounds) which creates a calming, almost escaping quality - helping readers feel how the great-great-grandfather found peace despite his harsh reality. The aggressive repetition of "back" emphasises the cramped, restrictive living conditions of industrial workers.
