Macbeth's Historical Context

Ever wondered why Shakespeare chose to write about a Scottish king? It's because King James I ruled both England and Scotland, so setting the play in Scotland was a clever way to flatter the new monarch.

Shakespeare wrote Macbeth during the Jacobean era (named after James), and he wanted to stay popular with the royal court. The play includes themes that James personally cared about, making it essentially royal propaganda disguised as entertainment.

The Divine Right of Kings was a crucial belief at this time - people genuinely thought kings and queens were chosen directly by God. This meant plotting against a king wasn't just treason; it was a sin that would send you straight to hell. The Gunpowder Plot of 1605, an actual assassination attempt against James, shows how real these fears were.

James even wrote a book called Daemonologie about witchcraft, believing witches were "slaves of Satan" who deserved execution. Shakespeare knew his audience would be terrified of supernatural forces, so the three witches in Macbeth would have genuinely frightened viewers.
