Ever wondered what it feels like to leave home for the first time? Armitage's poem perfectly captures that bittersweet moment when you're desperate for independence but still need your mum's support.
The entire poem uses an extended metaphor of a tape measure to represent the mother-son relationship. She holds the "zero-end" (the anchor) whilst he moves away with the measuring tape, symbolising how she remains his emotional foundation even as he gains independence. The practical task of measuring rooms becomes a powerful symbol of growing up.
The language creates brilliant contrasts - "Anchor. Kite" shows his mixed emotions about leaving. His mother represents security (anchor) but he wants the freedom to soar (kite). The semantic field of measurements ("metres, centimetres, span") reinforces how their relationship is being stretched to its limits.
Key insight: The ending "to fall or fly" shows the speaker understands both the risks and opportunities of independence - he might fail, but he might also flourish.
