An Inspector Calls: In-Depth Plot Summary

The Celebration Turns Sour
What starts as a lovely spring evening in 1912 quickly becomes a nightmare for the Birlings. The family are celebrating Sheila's engagement to Gerald, but there's already tension - Sheila suspects Gerald lost interest in her last summer for mysterious reasons.
Inspector Goole arrives with devastating news: a young woman called Eva Smith has died by suicide after drinking disinfectant. He begins questioning each family member, and the ugly truth starts to emerge.
Arthur Birling, the factory owner, had sacked Eva Smith from his business simply because she joined a strike for better wages. Then Sheila got Eva fired from a department store out of jealousy. Each revelation makes the family more uncomfortable.
The biggest shock comes when the Inspector reveals that Eva Smith changed her name to Daisy Renton - and Gerald's face goes white. He's forced to admit he spent last summer with Daisy as his mistress whilst supposedly courting Sheila.
💡 Remember: Priestley uses each character to represent different social classes and their treatment of the working class in 1912.

The Final Revelations and Twist
The investigation gets even darker as Eric's shameful secret comes to light. He'd met Eva/Daisy at a bar, drunkenly forced himself on her, and got her pregnant. When she needed money, he stole from his father's business to help her.
Sybil Birling, Eric's mother, delivered the final blow. When Eva/Daisy appealed to her charity for help whilst pregnant, Sybil rejected her application - unknowingly refusing to help her own future grandchild.
Just when it seems the Inspector has exposed everyone's guilt, Gerald discovers there's no Inspector Goole at the police station. The family realise they've been tricked, and no girl has actually died - it was all an elaborate hoax.
But Priestley saves the best twist for last. As the older Birlings start to relax and forget their shame, the telephone rings. A young woman has just been found dead after drinking disinfectant, and a real police inspector is on his way to question them.
💡 Key Theme: The cyclical ending suggests that if we don't learn from our mistakes and take social responsibility, we'll be forced to face the consequences again and again.
We thought you’d never ask...

The app is very easy to use and well designed. I have found everything I was looking for so far and have been able to learn a lot from the presentations! I will definitely use the app for a class assignment! And of course it also helps a lot as an inspiration.
This app is really great. There are so many study notes and help [...]. My problem subject is French, for example, and the app has so many options for help. Thanks to this app, I have improved my French. I would recommend it to anyone.
Wow, I am really amazed. I just tried the app because I've seen it advertised many times and was absolutely stunned. This app is THE HELP you want for school and above all, it offers so many things, such as workouts and fact sheets, which have been VERY helpful to me personally.
