Eric Birling: Character Analysis

Eric's transformation is one of the most dramatic in the play. At first glance, he seems like the least moral character - he's a heavy drinker, forces himself on Eva Smith, gets her pregnant, and steals money from his father's business. But here's the twist: by the end, he's the one who truly accepts responsibility for his actions.

Unlike his parents, Eric shows genuine remorse. He says "The fact remains that I did what I did" and "My God - I'm not likely to forget." This isn't just guilt talking - it's real understanding of the harm he's caused. He doesn't try to excuse his behaviour or pretend it didn't happen.

Eric's isolation from his family explains a lot about his problems. He turns to alcohol and prostitutes because he feels unloved and unsupported at home. His father gets on better with Gerald than with his own son, which must be crushing. When Eric finally explodes at his mother - "You don't understand anything. You never really did" - it might be the most honest moment in the entire play.

Priestley uses Eric to show that change is possible. His journey from irresponsible young man to someone who stands up for what's right gives the audience hope. If Eric can transform, perhaps society can too.

Key Quote: "You lot may be letting yourselves out nicely" - Eric calls out his family's hypocrisy when they try to pretend nothing happened.

The app is very easy to use and well designed. I have found everything I was looking for so far and have been able to learn a lot from the presentations! I will definitely use the app for a class assignment! And of course it also helps a lot as an inspiration.

This app is really great. There are so many study notes and help [...]. My problem subject is French, for example, and the app has so many options for help. Thanks to this app, I have improved my French. I would recommend it to anyone.

Wow, I am really amazed. I just tried the app because I've seen it advertised many times and was absolutely stunned. This app is THE HELP you want for school and above all, it offers so many things, such as workouts and fact sheets, which have been VERY helpful to me personally.
