An Inspector Calls Act 2 Summary: Analysis and Key Quotes

Act 2 Summary - The Truth Unravels
Gerald tries to get Sheila out of the room before spilling his secrets, but the Inspector isn't having any of it - he wants everyone to witness the truth. When Mrs Birling storms in complaining about the Inspector's rudeness, she's got no idea what's coming her way.
The big bombshell drops when Gerald admits to his affair with Eva Smith (who he knew as Daisy Renton). He'd kept her as his mistress over the summer, though he claims he wasn't actually in love with her - ouch! Sheila's reaction is brilliant - she respects his honesty but still hands back her engagement ring because she's no mug.
Mrs Birling's interrogation reveals she's probably the nastiest of the lot. As chair of a women's charity, she refused to help Eva when she was pregnant and desperate. The girl had even used the name "Mrs Birling," which absolutely infuriated Sybil.
Key Moment: Mrs Birling demands that the father of Eva's baby should take full responsibility - not realising she's condemning her own son Eric, who walks in just as she figures it out!

Act 2 Key Quotations - Character Revealed Through Words
Sheila's transformation shines through her quotes in this act. When she says "I know I'm to blame - and I'm desperately sorry," she becomes the first Birling to actually show proper empathy for Eva. Her line "I can't stop thinking about it" proves she's genuinely haunted by her actions.
Mrs Birling couldn't be more different - every quote shows how heartless she is. She claims Eva "had only herself to blame" and dismisses the whole thing as "absurd business." These quotes reveal someone who genuinely believes she's done nothing wrong.
The phrase "girls of that class" is particularly nasty, showing how Mrs Birling sees working-class people as morally inferior. This class prejudice runs deep in her character and explains why she felt no guilt about refusing help to a desperate pregnant woman.
Stage Direction Spotlight: When Sheila "(hands him the ring)", it's not just about returning jewellery - it shows how much she's grown from the materialistic girl we met in Act 1.

The app is very easy to use and well designed. I have found everything I was looking for so far and have been able to learn a lot from the presentations! I will definitely use the app for a class assignment! And of course it also helps a lot as an inspiration.
This app is really great. There are so many study notes and help [...]. My problem subject is French, for example, and the app has so many options for help. Thanks to this app, I have improved my French. I would recommend it to anyone.
Wow, I am really amazed. I just tried the app because I've seen it advertised many times and was absolutely stunned. This app is THE HELP you want for school and above all, it offers so many things, such as workouts and fact sheets, which have been VERY helpful to me personally.
