Ever wondered what happens when someone wants something so badly they'd do anything to get it? Macbeth's "vaulting ambition" is described like a horse jumping over a fence without knowing what's on the other side - pretty reckless, right?
This metaphor shows how Macbeth's desire for power is so overwhelming that he doesn't care about the consequences. Shakespeare uses this to foreshadow that ambition will be Macbeth's hamartia (tragic flaw) - the very thing that destroys him. The imagery suggests his ambition literally "vaults" beyond safe limits, setting up his inevitable downfall.
"Stars hide your fires, let not light see my black and deep desires" reveals the internal conflict tearing Macbeth apart. He's asking darkness to hide his evil thoughts because he knows they're wrong. The juxtaposition between light and darkness (representing evil) shows he's fully aware that regicide (killing the king) goes against everything he should believe in.
