Act 1: The Inspector Arrives
Your evening starts with the Birling family celebrating daughter Sheila's engagement to Gerald Croft in their comfortable dining room. Arthur Birling, the pompous business owner father, makes confident predictions about the Titanic being unsinkable and war being impossible - statements that immediately seem foolish to audiences.
Everything changes when Inspector Goole arrives unexpectedly with shocking news. He announces that a young woman named Eva Smith has died by suicide, drinking disinfectant in desperation. The family initially denies knowing her, but their lies quickly unravel.
Mr Birling admits he sacked Eva from his factory simply because she demanded better wages during a strike. Sheila becomes distressed when she realises her father's harsh behaviour, and you can see her starting to develop more socialist views about treating workers fairly.
Key Point: Sheila also confesses to getting Eva fired from her next job at Milwards department store, jealously having her dismissed just for smirking. Gerald's nervous behaviour hints that his connection to Eva runs much deeper.

Acts 2 & 3: Shocking Revelations and Consequences
Act 2 reveals Gerald's shameful secret - he had an affair with Eva (who used the name Daisy Renton) after meeting her at a bar. Though he provided her with money and accommodation over the summer, he callously ended the relationship, leaving her more vulnerable than before.
Mrs Birling's coldness proves most shocking when she admits to turning away a pregnant, desperate woman from her charity. Ironically, she demands the baby's father take responsibility, not realising she's condemning her own son Eric.
The final act delivers the ultimate twist - Eric is revealed as the baby's father. He'd been stealing money from his father's business to support Eva, but she refused the stolen cash, showing more moral integrity than the wealthy Birlings. After Inspector Goole delivers a powerful speech about social responsibility and leaves, Gerald discovers there might not be a real inspector at all.
Final Twist: Just when the older Birlings think they've escaped scandal, a phone call announces that a girl has died and a real inspector is coming. The cycle begins again, leaving audiences questioning what's real and what the future holds.
