Exploring Power and Influence in 'An Inspector Calls' - Grade 9

How Power Corrupts the Upper Classes
Ever wondered how the rich get away with treating people badly? Priestley shows this perfectly through Sheila's abuse of power when she gets Eva Smith fired from her job.
Sheila admits she "went to the manager and told him this girl had been very impertinent" - but this was a complete lie. She used her social status as a weapon just because Eva looked better in a dress than she did. This petty jealousy had devastating consequences for Eva's life.
Gerald's sexual exploitation of Eva reveals even darker abuse of power. He calls their relationship "inevitable" - as if wealthy men naturally have the right to use working-class women. This shows how the upper classes saw exploitation as completely normal.
Mrs Birling's prejudice against Eva demonstrates the hypocrisy of the wealthy. She "naturally" disliked Eva for using the Birling name, showing how the middle classes picked and chose who deserved help based on their own twisted moral standards.
Key Point: Priestley deliberately made his characters unlikeable to turn his Christian audience away from capitalism and towards socialism.
The Ultimate Message About Power and Responsibility
Mr Birling's fear of a "public scandal" perfectly sums up capitalist priorities - protecting reputation over accepting responsibility. He's more worried about his image than the fact that his family destroyed someone's life.
Eric's theft of fifty pounds (worth 40 weeks of wages!) shows how privileged young men could exploit even their own families without consequences. His excuse that he "intended to pay it back" is pathetic - especially since he had no job and a serious drinking problem.
The way the family immediately tries to "cover it up" proves Priestley's point that capitalism breeds selfishness and moral blindness. They never truly see their actions as wrong because they're too focused on protecting themselves.
Remember: Priestley's message is clear - we are "all members of one body" and should care for each other, unlike the capitalist mindset that only serves itself.

J.B. Priestley's "An Inspector Calls" is all about exposing how the wealthy abuse their power over ordinary working people. Through the Birling family and Gerald, Priestley shows us exactly why he believed capitalism was destructive and unfair to society.
How Power Corrupts the Upper Classes
