Scrooge's Character and Setting
Right from the start, Dickens establishes Scrooge as a cold, miserly character through vivid metaphors. The famous description of him being "hard and sharp as flint" and "solitary as an oyster" shows how he's completely cut off from human warmth and generosity.
The harsh winter setting mirrors Scrooge's personality perfectly. Phrases like "cold, bleak, biting weather" and "darkness is cheap and Scrooge liked it" create an atmosphere that reflects his inner coldness. Even his clerk is described as being "warmer than Scrooge" despite working in freezing conditions.
Scrooge's attitude towards the poor is shockingly cruel. When asked about charity, he coldly responds "Are there no prisons?" and suggests that if people "would rather die, they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population." This reveals his complete lack of empathy.

Marley's Ghost and Consequences
Marley's ghost introduces the supernatural element that will transform Scrooge. The ghost wears chains "made of cash-boxes, keys, padlocks, ledgers, deeds, and heavy purses" - a powerful symbol showing how greed literally weighs down the soul after death.
The chain metaphor is crucial to understanding the story's message. Marley explains "I wear the chain I forged in life... link by link, and yard by yard" and warns Scrooge that his own chain is already "full as heavy and as long" and growing longer each day he remains selfish.
