Language Techniques and Their Effects
Conditional tense and modal verbs create a sense of hypothetical longing - "If the darkening sky could lift" shows the speaker fantasising about different outcomes. This technique builds hope whilst simultaneously emphasising that these are just wishes, not reality.
Collective pronouns like "our mistakes" reveal that the speaker still thinks of themselves as part of a couple. They can't mentally separate from their ex-lover, which intensifies the pain of the break-up.
The semantic field of light versus darkness runs throughout - light represents happiness and togetherness, whilst darkness symbolises sadness and separation. The "shortened days and endless nights" perfectly capture that post-break-up feeling where everything feels darker.
Epistemic modality shows the speaker's uncertainty about what might have been, contrasting sharply with the definite future tense about death and time's inevitability.
Language Tip: Notice how the weak modals (could, would) shift to strong ones (will) - this shows growing acceptance that some things cannot be changed.
