Question 2: Summary (8 marks)
You'll need to pull information from both Source A and Source B to create a clear, concise summary. Think of this as creating a mini-report that captures the main ideas from both texts without getting bogged down in tiny details.
A summary is basically a shortened version that hits all the important points without the fluff. You're not giving your opinion here - just stating what you've understood from reading both sources.
The key is to show you can infer meaning from the texts, not just copy out obvious facts. Look for the underlying messages and themes that connect both sources together.
Top tip: Spend about 12-15 minutes on this question and aim for roughly equal coverage of both sources.
Question 3: Language Analysis (12 marks)
This question is all about spotting the author's methods and explaining how they create specific effects. You're essentially becoming a detective, hunting for the techniques writers use to influence their readers.
Look out for key language features like metaphors, similes, alliteration, and hyperbole. Don't just identify them though - explain what effect they create and why the author chose to use them.
Author methods are your golden ticket to extra marks here. Think about how writers use abstract nouns to create emotional impact, or how they might use irony and humour to make their point more memorable.
Remember: Always link your analysis back to the effect on the reader - that's what gets you the higher marks!
Question 4: Comparison (16 marks)
This is your big-ticket question where you'll compare how two writers present their similar perspectives using different methods. You're looking at both what they say and how they say it.
Start by identifying the structural viewpoint - how each text is organised and how the different parts fit together. Consider the whole text structure including introductions, main body, and conclusions.
Pay attention to narrative perspective (the point of view), tone (the writer's attitude), and language features like similes, metaphors, and sentence structure. Figurative language often reveals a lot about how writers want their audience to feel.
Success strategy: Use the point-by-point method - compare one aspect at a time rather than writing about each text separately.
