Understanding Question Four

Question Four is all about agreeing or disagreeing with a statement about how a writer presents characters, events, or themes. You'll need to decide whether you "wholeheartedly agree," "partially agree," or disagree entirely with what another student has suggested about the text.

The examiners want to see you analyse language and structure whilst evaluating how effectively the writer creates specific effects. You're not just spotting techniques - you're judging how well they work and building an argument about it.

Since it's worth 20 marks, spend exactly 20 minutes on this question. That gives you enough time to write 3-4 detailed paragraphs that really dig into the text and support your viewpoint.

Top Tip: Always take a clear stance from the start - don't sit on the fence! The examiners want to see confident evaluation, not wishy-washy responses.
