Literary Techniques That Actually Matter

Ever wondered how writers make their stories feel so real and vivid? They use clever tricks called literary devices that you can spot once you know what to look for!

Similes and metaphors are comparison tools that writers love. A simile says something is "like" something else (my brother is like a pig), whilst a metaphor goes further and says something actually is something else (my brother is a pig). Both help readers picture exactly what the writer means.

Repetition might seem boring, but writers use it on purpose to hammer home important ideas. When you see the same words popping up again and again, pay attention - the writer's trying to tell you something crucial!

Onomatopoeia is just a fancy word for sound effects in writing. Words like "crash," "bang," or "whisper" make you hear the story as well as read it.

Top Tip: When answering comprehension questions, always use words from the actual question in your answer - it shows you've understood what's being asked!

Story Planning and Essay Writing Made Simple

Planning a story is like building with blocks - you need the right pieces in the right order. Start with your character, think about their journey (called a narrative arc), and decide how they'll change by the end.

Setting isn't just about where your story happens - it's about creating the right mood. Writers use pathetic fallacy to make weather match emotions. Dark, stormy weather suggests danger or sadness, whilst sunny scenes feel cheerful and hopeful.

Writing essays becomes much easier when you follow a simple pattern: thoughts, evidence, analysis. Start with what you think about a character, back it up with quotes from the text, then explain how your evidence proves your point.

The analysis bit is where you shine! Spot those literary techniques like similes and repetition, explain what important words mean, and think about what images represent. Don't forget to mention historical context - it shows you really understand the bigger picture.

Remember: Short, simple sentences in your answers work much better than long, complicated ones that confuse everyone (including you)!
