Text A: Eurostar's 'Stories are Waiting in Paris' Advert
This multimodal text combines visuals, music and a French narrator to flog train tickets to Paris. Launched in 2013 during Downton Abbey (smart timing!), it targets the so-called 'Eurostar generation' - people who fancy themselves as international jet-setters.
The advert's positive lexical field creates endless possibilities through repetition of the modal verb 'maybe'. "Maybe you'll go left, maybe you'll go right" - this immediately puts you in control of your own Parisian adventure. The campaign deliberately uses stereotypical Parisian imagery like the Eiffel Tower, fancy food, and romantic encounters to hook viewers.
The direct address makes it personal - 'you' could be living this fantasy. Even when they show a grumpy Frenchman with "hopefully not him", it's still optimistic. The final declarative "stories are waiting" is pure marketing genius - it promises excitement and mystery if you just buy that ticket.

The opening line "Paris - The scum of Greenwich village, New York" is brutal. That isolated noun 'Paris' forces you to think of your own stereotypes before he demolishes them. He's calling American Bohemians (artsy, unconventional types) 'scum' - not exactly tourist board material!
His extended metaphor comparing the famous Café Rotonde to a zoo's bird-house is genius.
