Structural Analysis WHAT NOT TO DO Do not analyse any language No generic comment on effect of structure Do not think structural features will be easy to spot, sometimes it is as subtle as changing from dialogue to description. WHAT TO DO Identify specific structural features Find purpose of structure and it should be precise and contextualised on a specific point of the text Identify, Explain, Comment, Analyse, what effect it has on the progression of the extract and on the reader QUICK TIPS: 1. Read the WHOLE text 2. Answer the focus of the question 3. Read what part the extract is from 4. Use 3-4 quotes P1Q4. To evaluate texts critically and support this with reference WHAT NOT TO DO: Do not repeat the same points repeatedly throughout the three paragraphs therefore have a range of sufficient quotes and ideas Do not forget to give evidence for every point and feeling you describe however, do not make them lengthy Do not ignore the two-part process of the question and ALWAYS refer to the two points and the writers' methods used to support or disagree the persons quote QUICK TIPS: WHAT TO DO: Pick a side that you will agree on after reading the statement (Normally strongly agree) Identify the techniques used by the writer to show something and what effect it has on the reader Use an excellent range of quotes from the desired lines and analyse and evaluate the writer's intent Explain how and what the quote makes you/the reader feel and why it makes you feel that way 1. Reread the relevant part of the text asked for 2. Plan the question quickly using a T-Table 3. Use quotes and AO2 from previous questions 4.PEEL PARAGPARHS X3 P1Q5. Creative Writing This question will assess your AO5 and AO6 abilitites Do not give a formulaic approach and instead show uniqueness You will be asked for a narrative or a descriptive writing Write a plan before beginning, climax etc Write 5 paragraphs = Intro (description usually), 3 paragraphs, Conclusion (conclude the part of your story) Write a small checklist of language and structural features before beginning, so you can tick it off as you go QUICK TIPS: 1. Identify the writing type you must do and identify what is needed for it 2. Identify your key motive of writing 3. Vary punctuation and vocabulary 4. Ambitious and sophisticated language which falls in well with the chronology of your story 5. Vary sentence length (acknowledge different structural methods) 6. You are allowed to adjust and use other ideas/quotes from movies, books, and literature pieces you have read in English literature AO5 = It is the content and organisation worth 24 marks. AO6 = It is the technical accuracy and worth 16 marks.
