When I was younger, I always loved playing hide and seek in the woods. I remember how it used to be: the trees were an embrace of umber and jade which protected us like an eagle shields her chicks; roots were woven into the flower-strewn path and bathed in the scattered light which filtered through the aromatic bouquet of foliage; leaves rustled as they cascaded in every direction, whispering the secrets of the forest in their delicately tragic dance. Harmonising with the enchanting melody of the greenery would be chirping birds and scuttling beetles and fluttering butterflies, their notes allowing for a kaleidoscopic imagination of the veiled euphoria of the woodland. Everything is different here now. Mere skeletons of their former bloom, the trees' grasp is feeble and unnerving as they encroach upon each other with flailing moss-covered limbs. Mother Nature seems to have grown weary; her symphony is disjointed and out of tune - leaves shudder in the bleakness and birds hauntingly croak their painful lullabies while the blustering wind scratches my skin like one thousand pinpricks, similarly to the sharp spike of the holly bushes which appear to have infiltrated every corner of the forest.
