Ever wondered what it feels like to run from danger with someone you love? This poem throws you straight into a midnight escape where a mother packs frantically in the dark, desperate to reach safety. Her "fingers tie knots like fish nets" - a brilliant simile showing how fear makes even simple tasks feel clumsy and panicked.
The setting immediately creates unease. She longs for her mother's comfort but faces the harsh reality that safety is "all the way over the other side of the world." The enjambment between stanzas emphasises this painful distance, making us feel her isolation.
