Maggie and the Reality of Poverty
Maggie's living conditions tell the brutal story of working-class poverty in Depression-era Scotland. The stage directions showing "a mattress on the floor with pillows, blankets, old coats" aren't just set design - they're Maggie's reality. She hasn't slept in a proper bed since giving birth in hospital, highlighting how overcrowding forces families into impossible situations.
Her desperate need to take on washing work reveals the economic strain crushing the Morrison family. When she says "I've done a whole copper-full of washing... you've had nothing to do but make your beds," we see how poverty forces women into exhausting labour just to survive.
Callout: Maggie's sleeping arrangements symbolise how poverty strips away basic human dignity, turning homes into survival spaces rather than places of comfort.
The physical space itself becomes a character in the play. Every piece of furniture, every makeshift bed tells us about the financial desperation that defines the Morrison household.
Gender Conflict and Character Relationships
Maggie's observations about domestic violence expose the brutal gender dynamics of her world. Her comment "I just can't understand a woman lets a man bash her about. Catch me staying with him" reveals both her strength and her naivety about the traps that keep women in abusive relationships.
This stance creates dramatic irony - whilst Maggie criticises other women for staying with violent partners, she remains with John despite his failures as a provider and father. Her own situation is more complex than she initially recognises.

This apps acc the goat. I find revision so boring but this app makes it so easy to organize it all and then you can ask the freeeee ai to test yourself so good and you can easily upload your own stuff. highly recommend as someone taking mocks now
