- Defined as any assistance that is given to a comtry
that would not have been provided through nound market forces.

→ Official Aid

Types of Aid and How They Work

When governments want to help other countries, they use official aid. This can happen in two ways: bilateral aid (when one country helps another directly) or multilateral aid (when rich countries pool their money through international organisations).

Unofficial aid comes from charities and NGOs like Oxfam or Amnesty International. These groups often respond faster than governments and focus on specific issues.

There's also a difference between quick fixes and long-term solutions. Humanitarian aid tackles immediate crises like natural disasters, whilst development aid aims to reduce poverty over many years through infrastructure projects and education programmes.

Quick Tip: Remember that development aid isn't always free money - countries often have to pay it back as long-term loans with low interest rates.

Development aid includes several types: tied aid (where countries must buy goods from the donor nation), project aid (grants for specific infrastructure like roads or schools), and technical aid (help developing new technology and skills). However, tied aid gets criticism because it might not create jobs locally and can be more expensive since recipient countries can't shop around for the best deals.
