Understanding Price Elasticity of Demand
Think about your favourite chocolate bar versus petrol for cars - when prices change, people react very differently to each. Price elasticity of demand measures exactly how much demand changes when prices go up or down.
Price elastic goods see big changes in demand when prices shift. If your local cinema raises ticket prices by 20%, loads fewer people might turn up because there are other entertainment options. The demand responds proportionally (or more) to the price change.
On the flip side, price inelastic goods barely see demand change even when prices jump. People still buy petrol even when it gets expensive because they need to get to work. These products are gold mines for businesses because they can raise prices without losing many customers.
Quick tip: Elastic = big reaction to price changes. Inelastic = small reaction to price changes.

What Makes Products Elastic or Inelastic?
Several key factors determine whether a product will be price sensitive or not. Availability of substitutes is huge - if there are loads of alternatives, people will easily switch when prices rise.
Branding and time on the market matter loads too. Think about how Apple can charge premium prices because of their strong brand loyalty. The nature of the good is crucial - necessities like bread and milk tend to be inelastic, whilst luxuries like designer clothes are typically elastic.
Companies spend millions trying to make their products more price inelastic through clever marketing and creating unique selling points. When they succeed, they can raise prices without losing customers. However, governments often step in to prevent firms from exploiting this too much.
Remember: Necessities = inelastic (people buy regardless). Luxuries = elastic (people can easily skip them).
