Drama Exam Strategy & Essential Knowledge

Time management is absolutely crucial for your drama exam success. You've got just 10 minutes for Section A's 4 marks, so quick recall of basic facts is essential here.

The five main staging types you must know are proscenium arch (traditional theatre with audience facing the stage), thrust (stage jutting into audience), traverse (audience on two sides), in the round (audience surrounds the stage), and promenade (audience moves around). Each creates different actor-audience relationships and affects how performances feel.

Stage directions always use the actor's perspective, not the audience's. Picture yourself standing on stage facing the audience - that's your reference point. Downstage is closer to the audience, upstage is further away, and left/right are from your position as the performer.

Quick tip: Remember "downstage" because actors used to literally walk down sloped stages towards the audience!

Theatre roles split into four main categories: creators (playwright, director, performers), crew (stage manager, technicians), designers (set, costume, lighting, sound), and front-of-house staff. Each role contributes to making live theatre happen, and understanding their responsibilities helps you appreciate how complex productions really are.
