Ever wondered why some theatres feel completely different from others? The staging configuration determines how the audience experiences a performance. Each setup creates unique opportunities and challenges for performers.

End-on staging uses a traditional proscenium arch, where the audience sits in front of the stage like watching a massive picture frame. Thrust staging pushes the performance area into the audience, creating a more intimate connection.

Traverse staging places the audience on two opposite sides, whilst in-the-round staging surrounds performers completely with spectators. These configurations affect everything from movement to lighting design.

Stage Directions and Areas

Learning stage directions is like having a GPS for the theatre! The stage is divided into nine specific areas that help everyone communicate clearly during rehearsals and performances.

Upstage refers to the back (furthest from audience), whilst downstage means closest to the audience. Stage left and stage right are always from the performer's perspective facing the audience. The centre stage area is your focal point.

The nine areas combine these directions: USL (upstage left), USC (upstage centre), USR (upstage right), CSL (centre stage left), CS (centre stage), CSR (centre stage right), DSL (downstage left), DSC (downstage centre), and DSR (downstage right).

Remember: Stage directions never change, even if you're facing different ways on stage!
