The 6 R's of Sustainability
The 6 R's give you a brilliant framework for thinking about sustainable design and consumption. These principles help both designers and consumers make choices that benefit our planet.
Repair means fixing products instead of binning them straight away. Yes, repairing your mobile might cost nearly as much as buying new, but it's far better for the environment. Manufacturers can still profit by selling replacement parts rather than whole new products.
Re-use extends a product's life by passing it on or finding creative new purposes for it. Think about turning old car tyres into garden swings or donating clothes you've outgrown.
Recycle uses much less energy than extracting brand new materials from scratch. Products designed with recycling in mind should separate easily into different materials, and clear recycling labels make this process loads easier for everyone.
💡 Quick Tip: Before throwing anything away, ask yourself - can I repair, re-use, or recycle this first?
Rethink, Reduce, and Refuse
Rethink challenges you to approach design problems differently. Instead of a battery-powered radio, why not create a wind-up version? This kind of creative thinking leads to more sustainable solutions that don't rely on disposable components.
Reduce focuses on creating durable, long-lasting products like rechargeable batteries. When products last longer, customers buy fewer replacements, and manufacturers use less energy and transport. It's a win-win situation for everyone involved.
Refuse puts power in your hands as a consumer. You can refuse to buy products with excessive packaging, items that have travelled halfway round the world, or products that'll be expensive and inefficient to run. Your purchasing decisions send a clear message to manufacturers.
These social issues matter because they affect real communities and environments worldwide. By understanding and applying these principles, you're contributing to positive change.
